How Famous Authors Stay Inspired and Keep Writing

How do you coax your writing inspiration? Do you have a favorite place you like to write? How do you keep the writing flowing?

The more we learn about what works for us, the better we can become as writers. Taking the time to honor our writing process on a regular schedule can reap a bounty of results. In fact, many authors have a regular writing routine that serves as a foundation for them.

Having a routine when you write can also provide a sense of reassurance and comfort. It can protect you from the ramble of distraction, and allow you to have the time you need to do what you have to do-write. Global English Editing has outlined the writing routines of 20 famous authors in a fun infographic below. Perhaps you can borrow a few ideas!

Many thanks to Sierra Delarosa from Global English Editing and The Expert Editor for the infographic and information!

  1. Everyone sure has their own way. We just go to it at our bay.

  2. I couldn't be an early riser writer, but I do have my own tricks for prompting writing.

  4. I'd love to have a routine, but I don't, and based on prior years, I'm not about to have one. Not ever. Well, maybe in another life.

  5. I always had to do my writing late at night when my children were growing up. Now, it's my habit and when I get all my writing done. I think routines are really important.

  7. Great graphic!

I think I need to take a leaf off of Kurt Vonnegut's habits - I need more core exercises. However, I'm more of a walker than a swimmer.

And, writing while facing a window is something I often do. I dislike writing by "canned" light only.

  8. So interesting to read about the writing habits of these authors! Maybe I should rent a hotel room like Maya Angelou, so I can be free of distractions!

  9. Hi Alex...

Very inserting post... I was hoping for some ideas here. LOL But I am sure once my inspiration hit, I will have some sort of routine... HOPEFULLY!

  10. I need a swift kick in the butt. I have taken too much time off from writing and now getting back in the zone has been my problem. Self-discipline is the key, along with what works best for your lifestyle. I'm ready to get those writing juices flowing again. But I need to make the time happen. Talking about it isn't going to get it done. Thanks Alex for all you do to inspire writers to keep on writing and not give it up.

  11. I don't have a regular schedule of it, but when I'm inspired, I try to write as much as I can because it flows well and rarely needs much tweaking during those times. When I force it, I can spend three times as long for less than half the results, and I'm never satisfied when I go back to reread.

  14. One thing they all have in common is a regular writing routine. And it looks like most of them preferred writing in the morning. I do too. At the end of the day I'm tired and my creativity goes away.

  15. I'm still trying to work out a routine that works well with my busy schedule. It's hard to fit things in with a day job and looking after my daughter and too often writing falls to the bottom of my list of things to do. This has given me a few ideas to try.
