I guess I should have gone into the past tens, especially for that bugger "lie, lay," but I didn't. Like Jemi, I avoid using the past tense of the transitive "to lay." It's not used commonly in spoken English, and my bet is, it will fall into disuse completely . It may take a while, but not using it is the best solution.
