An IWSG Day Software Update

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time - and return comments. This group is all about connecting! Be sure to link to this page and display the badge in your post.

And please be sure your avatar links back to your blog! Otherwise, when you leave a comment, people can't find you to comment back.

Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSG.

The awesome co-hosts for the July 3rd posting of the IWSG are JS Pailly, Rebecca Douglass, Pat Garcia, Louise-Fundy Blue, and Natalie Aguirre!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional!

July 3 Question - What is your favorite writing processing software, apps (e.g. Word, Scrivener, yWriter, Dabble, Google Docs, Fictionary, Atticus), and tools? Why does it fit your process? Why do you recommend them? Which is favorite if you have more than one?

Is it sad that I've only ever heard of half of those examples? I still stick with good old Word and use Excel to keep notes and stuff. Heck. Sometimes I may just jot stuff down in notepad until I get it to where it needs to go. Nothing fancy here.

Got any better software than I do? Does it make life easier? Have you heard of all the examples above?

Hi Pat - my Avatar stopped working in places a while ago ... I'll need to check it out ... yes ... lots of examples around for everyone to chose from. Word, Excel and Scrivener ... et al - I too would keep it simple - cheers Hilary

Me too, on using Word, Excel and writing things down on paper. My ability to keep track of those papers is a challenge.

You've heard of more than I, Pat! I have a drawer where I keep materials and ideas for what I'm working on. I'm not sure if Word makes ideas easier. Half the time I'm trying to figure out what the heck is going on or how I can outfox what is going on. 😵‍💫. Have a great day, my friend!

I had no idea there is writing processing software. I use Word and sometimes Wordpad. I am like a dinosaur. A dinosaur who writes.

It’s such a relief to see I’m not the only one who is happy to stick to Word!

For me, the simpler the better.

I think no writer ever leaves Word.

My favorite is Microsoft Word although I have an editor who prefers Google's version as it's free.

I"m another fan of Word. Too cumbersome to try and change over to anything else.

Hi all. I did not answer the question on my site, because I've just launched a new author site here: https://gregslombaauthor.blogspot.com/

I tend to be boring and just use Word when I'm writing.

Word is my mainstay, though I've begun to use ProwritingAid at the suggestion of a friend. Grammerly has been in my toolbox for a while - oddly I see a red line under Grammerly suggesting that it's misspelled. Ha!

I attempted Scrivener years ago, but it scared me off. Writing is complicated enough without its learning curve!

Thanks for this!

P.S. not sure why, but I'm no longer receiving an email with the question in advance - ? Oh well, I write anyway - It's fun!

Word is good. Thanks for sharing

It's Word all the way for me, though sometimes I wish they would stop doing so many "updates." I use Grammarly and Excel, and (don't laugh) I just recently learned about Notepad ;-)
Thank you for co-hosting!

Been using Google Docs exclusively for about six years, only using Word for work (until 2020) or when I send something off for formatting/editing. I find Google Docs to be a very nice stripped down version of Word.

Oh and, I only use Google Docs for transcribing, as all of my original writing is composed using pen and paper.
