Reading and writing, like everything else, improve with practice. And, of course, if there are no young readers and writers, there will shortly be no older ones. Literacy will be dead, and democracy - which many believe goes hand in hand with it - will be dead as well. – Margaret Atwood
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. – Joseph Addison
Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all. – Henry David Thoreau

of course there is no substitute to reading, even for a writer
Hi Alex - I'm not a good reader .. the summer needs to rectify that. But I research a lot .. however I do understand I need to read more, to improve my writing ...
Cheers Hilary
To be a writer you have to read. You are so right on that.
We always seem to be preaching to the choir with these "read books" posts. Of course, we're readers. We need to encourage people who are not authors or bloggers to read.

Read to write, works for my site
Great advice... We all learn so much from books!
Amen. Though through April, I haven't had much chance to read.
Susan, I've not been reading much either...
Ah, human Alex,
I read you loud and clear. Now to pawblish my comment. Arf!

*argh* I can't believe I spent so many years as basically a 'non-reader'. Not that I had trouble reading, but I was reading first textbooks and then children's books to my kids.
Thank GOODNESS I saw a button on someone's blog about a reading challenge in late 2013! :O)
I love reading!
The only problem is trying to balance reading and writing time...
Readers are leaders and leaders are readers.
There's nothing better than curling up next to the fireplace with a book on a cold day in my opinion.

I always loved reading and am thankful my child has inherited the love of reading.

I've been a reader all of my life, and I'm grateful that my parents always had a house filled with books and magazines.
So true. I can always tell which of students are readers. Their writing always gives them away.
I haven't read much this month due to the challenge and travel, and I miss it terribly. Today, once I got home, I made sure I had audiobooks and Kindle books set up, so I'm ready to read!
True :) I dis add reading to my R post also, I have a long list going on.

I started out reading and still love it. I think being a storyteller is a natural offshoot of being a reader.
I'm so glad I've gotten back into a good reading rhythm. I was worried about myself for a while. lol
Was a prolific reader when I was younger, but then as I got older that tailed off. But now that my writing has taken off so has my reading - even if I'm much slower these days.
I think reading makes you a better writer.
